I have since changed my Automatic Update settings to "Download updates but let me choose whether to install them". It's like they're going out of their way to anger and harm their customers. I can't imagine what Microsoft was thinking when they made this automatic reboot the default behavior on Windows. But it should NEVER automatically reboot without user input. The worst possible behavior ought to be that Windows continues to produce nag screens, reminding you to reboot. This is completely unacceptable behavior for the default settings on Windows. As a result, my program terminated, and the calculation was lost. However, when I checked my computer this morning, I found that sometime during the night, the computer rebooted because of Windows Automatic Updates. The calculation required about 12 hours, and so would have been done this morning.
The program was performing a very important calculation, which I needed for work today. Last evening, I left my computer with a program running. Usually, I leave my computer on all the time, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. I am using Windows 7 (64-bit) Ultimate edition.
